Natural sugar comes fresh from nature in the form of fruit, vegetables and their juices. With natural sugar you not only get the energy from sugar, you also get the added nutritional benefits of a huge array of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fibre – nutrients we need each day as part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Nutritionists say that these foods are ‘nutrient rich’.
Added sugar found in fast food, confectionery, pastries and soft drinks contains no valuable nutrients at all. In fact, foods that added sugar is generally found in are usually what nutritionists call ‘nutrient poor’ foods.
If you compared, for example, a 650ml raspberry relief smoothie to a 600ml soft drink. Soft drinks, a source of added sugar, contain virtually no nutrients; whereas the smoothie is quite rich in nutrients, especially calcium, vitamin C, protein and niacin.
